Thai 2 Go at Food Truck Friday

Charlotte, NC

Historic South End

Food trucks are a growing trend.  Why shouldn't they be?  They are mobile food centers that serve delicious and reasonably priced eats.  They have become so popular in Charlotte, NC that there always seems to be some kind of food truck gathering somewhere in the city.  This summer I've been enjoying Food Truck Fridays in Historic South End.  South End located just outside of the city.  It's connected to the city via light rail and is a great place to find some good eats.  Apparently, a lot of other people have found out about the good eats and are bringing their friends and picnic gear to the food truck gathering.

There were over 10 food trucks to choose from.: cupcakes, ice cream, Mexican, turkey specialties, burgers, Asian... The aromas from each truck were wafting in the air.  Where do I start?

The lines were really long a few of the trucks.  Bet they have really good food.

It was smell overload.  After a few laps around the square, I decided that I would try Thai 2 Go.  The line wasn't as long and the smells coming from the truck wok was amazing.  I had to try it.

Their menu was simple enough (8 dishes!) and yet had everything that you would want.  They had the Thai food staples including Thai Tea, Phad Thai, Phad See Ew, Drunken Noodles (or Phad Kee Mao as I know it), Red Curry, and Fried Rice.  Everything is pretty much made on the spot (minus the big pot of curry) so you can customize your protein and spicy-ness to get it as spicy as you want.  The spicy scale is from one to five.

I ordered the Pad See Ew with a spicy level of four. I was feeling quite adventurous.  You can't expect any less from a Thai monkey!  I wanted to get some Thai tea but they were sold out.  Poo.

The noodles were definitely fresh and not made from a dry pack of noodles. They were so soft and chewy and melted in your mouth like butter.  What perfect noodle texture!

The sauce was great.  I must admit this was probably one of the best Phad See Ews I've ever had in my life.  It wasn't too salty and it was so full of flavor and fresh ingredients.  Definitely authentic.  I may go as far and say that I enjoyed this one more than any of the ones I've had in Thailand.  Only my Grandma can make it better.  The only downside was that I had to wait over 30 minutes for my meal, even though they told me it would be 15 minutes.  They could probably use a little help in the kitchen!

After dinner, I went to the King of Pops cart. I wonder why they weren't stationed with the other trucks?

Either way, the popsicles were so well known that everyone was crossing the street to get a few. The King of Pops serves some pretty unique flavors of gourmet popsicles and are known for having all natural popsicles with fresh fruit mixed into their fruit popsicles. I had the Blackberry Mojito and there were pieces of mint leaves throughout the popsicle. What a great way to cool down from the spicy Thai food! I didn't get a pic of the popsicle because it was melting too fast.

I'm definitely going to have keep coming to Food Truck Fridays and try some of the other food trucks.  Some tips for next time...
  • Bring your own chair or blanket if you plan on sticking around.
  • Bring your own drinks because they may not have anything left.  I think alcohol is allowed.
  • Bring more cash.  Some trucks only take cash, and a lot of them have unreliable credit card machines.  You don't want to miss out on food because you didn't bring enough money!

Overall, How Nuts Are We about Thai 2 Go?

Food: 5 coconuts
Service: 3 coconuts because took a while for made to order items
Repeatability: 5 coconuts
