Brunswick, GA
Downtown
Today's delicious adventure takes us to the small town of Brunswick, Georgia, a stop me and my travel companion made on the way to Saint Simons Island, Georgia. We chose to visit a local pizza place that was well rated on a number of restaurant rating websites. Fox's Pizza Den is located in downtown Brunswick, on a very quiet street where many stores are left unoccupied. Given the lack of any real traffic in the area, we were a little hesitant to enter but were happy that we did. Upon walking in, we were happily greeted by two of the staff members and seated at a nice table overlooking the street. This little restaurant had a retro diner feel to it, with vinyl records and posters of famous musicians decorating the red walls. There was even a booth made from the trunk of an old styled car! Just take a look at the menu cover.
After looking at the pretty extensive menu (it's not just pizza here, folks!), we decided on creating our own stombolis, or calzones as others call them, which were also one of the specials of the night. For just $6.50, we were able to create our own dish with 5 toppings. We also ordered a basket of the garlic knots to start.
These garlic knots were wonderful. Such a nice parmesan crust on the outside, soft, airy and chewy on the inside. I wish there was a touch more of the garlic and oil to cover the rather large pieces of bread, but there was enough on the bottom of the tray for me to dip the drier parts of the bread. These weren't just your average bread knots that were baked in a conventional oven. They definitely had the pizza crust vibe - looking and tasting quite like a brick pizza oven made bread. Mmm. Two thumbs up on garlicy and cheesey carbs dipped in marinara. :)
So I decided on getting mushrooms, spinach, ricotta, chicken, and basil in my stromboli. I was a little disappointed that they didn't offer my go-to topping artichoke but was happy with what I got. Large pieces of sliced mushrooms (not the white mushrooms you get at your local grocer but something much more MASSIVE), generous portions of gooey cheese, spinach and chicken spilled out of every crevice. The bottoms of the pastry wasn't burnt, the dish was hot all the way through, and was filled form end to end. My chicken was a bit on the drier side but the marinara helped bring it all together and moistened each bite. The chicken didn't have much flavor to it, but the combination of all the fresh ingredients really made for a nice dinner. Did I mention that this thing was large enough for breakfast the next day?
I was a bit too excited before I took this picture so there may be a few bites missing :)
Our other dish was a stromboli with Italian sausage, chicken, pineapple, ricotta cheese, and some onions. This one was rather meaty! It came out a touch burnt on the bottom crust, but overall had a nice freshness to it. The sausage was nice and flavorful, and nothing tasted out of place.
The service here was amazing. The food came out quickly and piping hot. Our drinks never went below a third of a glass and our waitress came back to check on us periodically, even though she had at least 5 other tables she was serving. The atmosphere really made the whole experience rather comfortable.
Look! Fun after dinner mints!
We decided to stay indoors since it was a bit warm outside but they even had a few seats outside to enjoy the ambiance of the city.
Food: 4 coconuts
Service: 5 coconuts
Repeatability: 4.5 coconuts - I definitely need to make my way back here to taste some of the pizzas. The next table ordered some of the small individual pizzas and they smelled AMAZING passing by our table...
Until next time... (◕‿◕✿)
