Labor Day BBQ festivities with melt in your mouth baby back ribs

Atlanta, GA

Happy Labor Day!

Thank you for all your hard… labor? :)

Today my family and I had a small BBQ get-together customary to celebrating Labor Day.  This was also another first; I have never made baby back bbq ribs.  We made barbeque ribs, red potato salad, macaroni and cheese, Texas toast, baked beans, grilled zucchini and squash, and sweet corn niblets.  So most of the foods were partially prepared or simply made from a box so I won't linger on those side dishes.  One thing I must say before getting into the yumminess that the homemade ribs were is that Sam's Club has some of the very best frozen sweet corn.  This corn is some of the sweetest and tastiest that I have ever had.  Daily Chef Steamable Super Sweet Corn.  The pack comes with 6- 12 ounce bags that are super convenient.  You just pop them in the microwave and in minutes, you will have the sweetest, creamiest corn niblets ever.
So, let's dive right into the main dish: the baby back ribs.  I started by applying a dry rub the night before.  I wanted to keep it simple: sea salt, black pepper, light brown sugar, paprika and a little bit of a garlic+herbs seasoning my mommy had laying around.  After putting all the spices together, I got my little hands dirty and spread the spices all over the ribs.  I made sure to spread it around the ribs evenly.  I did it last night and let it marinate overnight in the refrigerator.   This morning when I woke up from my very comfy bed, I started to prepare it.  The first thing I had to do was take that really yucky skin from the back of the ribs.  It was hard to pull it off at first, but I asked my mommy and she started to peel it for me.  She used her fingernails to start peeling and I pulled the rest!  It came out really nicely and not too hard.  After that, I put two sheets of aluminum foil on a baking sheet and placed the ribs with the boney side up.  I added another two sheets of foil paper on top and made a little pouch.  Remember to keep the folds of the pouch up!  If you don't, you'll make a big mess and your mommy might get angry at you! :-)  I asked my mommy to turn on the oven at 300F and she put the ribs in there for 3 hours.  After we made sure the ribs were cooked all the way through, we cut the ribs into smaller portion sizes, 2 ribs per portion.  I brushed on some honey barbeque sauce on the boney side, set the oven to broil and put the ribs back.  When the sauce started to look cooked and drier than when we brushed it on, we took the ribs back out to do the other side.  I made sure to put lots of sauce on the meaty side to make it tasted very yummy.  Back into the oven it went for another 10 minutes.  The kitchen was smelling delicious with all the sides and the barbeque sauce aromas filling the air...

The next thing I knew, the ribs were ready to eat!  Boy was I hungry by then.  I think everyone else was pretty hungry too because when I tried to take a picture of the food we had, everyone started to put their plates together (but you get the idea of what we had!).

Mmmm... look at the plate my daddy made for me!  The ribs were sooo moist and tender.  It was 'melt in your mouth and fall off the bone' goodness.  It was nice and tangy, very juicy, and not too sweet.

We also made a homemade pineapple cake - a perfect summer treat to end our barbeque.  Homemade whipped cream, vanilla pudding, yellow cake layers, and crushed pineapple.  Nom nom nom!

All of the that food together made my tummy a very happy tummy.  I think I am going into food coma now... ;D

( ^_^)o自自o(^_^ )  Cheers and until next time...
