When you first walk up to the restaurant, you will notice that there is plenty of seating outside, which would be great if you want to enjoy a nice relaxing meal outside. We opted to sit inside. Inside is also very spacious with a large central bar. The Day of the Dead theme is very edgy and colorful. You can feel a lot of energy in the atmosphere. This is the kind of place where I could start a big night out at the Music Factory.
Since it is Taco Tuesday, you can't expect us not to order tacos, right? So of course, we ordered tacos. We looked over the menu and chose three tacos each to try. There were also a lot of yummy sounding margarita drinks, but we didn't partake in those today. Unfortunately, today was a slow day for service. It took a while for our waiter to get our drink orders in and bring them to the table. We waited even longer to order our food.
When we finally got to order, Markus ordered one crispy chicken, one smoked brisket, and one grilled salmon. I ordered one crispy chicken, one carne asada, and one crisp mahi. The tacos are available with corn or flour tortillas so take your pick or mix and match.Since it is Taco Tuesday, you can't expect us not to order tacos, right? So of course, we ordered tacos. We were hoping that the kitchen wasn't as slow as our waiter today, but unfortunately, that wasn't the case. We waited over 30 minutes for our food to arrive. Now, there was some special event for a free salsa dancing class today and our waiter did seem to be running back and forth so maybe someone didn't show up for a shift, but we were hoping for a little more from a new restaurant at the Music Factory.
When our food finally appeared at the table, we were starving. This restaurant doesn't serve free chips and salsa to keep you satisfied until your main dish arrives so we were waiting with much anticipation. Here's a picture of the crispy chicken (left), the crisp Baja mahi, and the carne asada.
The crispy chicken was probably my favorite. The chicken was battered and fried and nice and juice. The avocado ranch was very flavorful and went well with a twist of fresh lime and a dash of hot sauce. The pickled onion gave the taco a nice tangy flavor.
The crispy mahi was also very tasty. The mahi was a little dry, but it did have a nice flavor to it thanks to the chipotle tartar sauce. The cabbage was standard slaw type topping, but was essential to the texture taco.
The carne asada was your typical steak taco. The meat was standard and had your typical steak taco seasoning. Nothing special here, but still satisfying.
Markus also thought the brisket was also pretty standard. It was very juicy...almost like stew in a taco. It was really messy to eat. The two corn tortillas that wrapped the brisket had been soaked through and crumbled while Markus tried to eat them. Next time, flour tortilla would be necessary for this taco.
Markus's favorite taco was the grilled salmon. The mango salsa was sweet and the lime yogurt made the taco rich. The salmon was grilled nicely and was very moist and not to fishy. Not a unique combination, but it had great execution.
Texicali had its faults today, but we are hoping it was just a fluke. The food was good enough that we are definitely coming back to see if we have better luck next Tuesday.
Overall, How Nuts Are We about Texicali?
Food: 4 coconuts. Good tacos for cheap!
Service: 2 coconuts. It wasn't too crowded, but there was a time when we couldn't find our waiter to order, and the food took a long time to get to our tummies.
Repeatability: 5 coconuts. There are quite a few different tacos to try. There is also the rest of the menu that we didn't even bother looking at because it was Taco Tuesday! We are also a fan of the salmon and the crispy chicken so we can just keep eating those each time. :)
