Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Located in downtown Toronto, Milagro sees its fair share of business professionals and large congregations of coworkers after work. We came in on a weekday evening so we experienced the large rush after work. Luckily we came in just before everyone else did. Hehe… The restaurant felt like a cozy little Mexican hipster vibe with some fun Spanish music. It was a pretty typical city scene restaurant… and those margaritas at the next table looked rather tastey! But, I digress…
My dining companion and I were seated really quickly by a
super nice and pleasant gentleman, who turned out to be our server. He paid lots of attention to our table and
was really helpful in recommending things from the menu and liked to make jokes
with us.
We ordered the small guacamole to start. As we were walking in to the restaurant to be
seated, we saw the chefs in the kitchen preparing the large batch in a huge
bowl so we were enticed to say the least. :) It was on the saltier side but super
flavorful and tasty. It was also a pretty
spicy! I think there were fresh
jalapenos blended in to the chunky mix.
The chips that came with it were a little thick but still crispy. They also seemed super fresh and made right
in the kitchen! The teeny cup of salsa
that came with the chips was watery and pretty bland. The ingredients were nice and fresh but
overall it was just sour- no real flavor.
A friend recommended the barbacoa pachuca, so of course, that is why
I ordered. It came with an order of scary
looking refried black beans, chopped onions and cilantro, corn tortillas, and a
little cup of hot sauce. The meat was
cooked well; it was still juicy and tender and had a nice mild and clean
flavor- not gamey or old. The onions and
cilantro added a much needed depth of flavor that I think was needed. A spritz of the lime and splash of the hot
sauce and you got yourself a smoky and flavorful little corn taco. The black bean mash was a little
intimidating, a big mass of dark purple and black mush. They were pretty salty too, so mixing a
little bit into each taco made it palatable.
This plate was super filling (a little on the pricier side) but I think
it was worth it.
Sorry! It was pretty dark in the restaurant so the picture is a little dark...
My dining companion ordered the entrée style arrachera, as per
the recommendation of our perky server. Entrée
style was an option you could add to any dish on the menu, which just meant you
got an additional taco, rice and beans.
Even with this addition, the plate was unfortunately small and not
really all that filling. The tacos were
really lacking any flavor and the texture of the meat really needed some
sauce. The meat was a touch dry and a
bit chewy – not one of the best things I have ever tried. The flavors were muddled- really nothing
special.
Warning for those who like refills: Each refill of soda costs an additional
$1.25, so get your fill someplace else if you are feeling thirsty!
The service was exceptional; my water glass never went
empty (he refilled my glass for me every time!), and our server made it a point to make sure we were comfortable.
So, How Nuts Are We about Milagro?
