Montreal, Quebec, Canada
So, Up until this day, I have never heard of “poutines.” At first, it really just sounded like a
dessert of a gelatinous nature. However,
a friend we were with said this was a must visit when coming to Montreal. Did I mention we are in Quebec, Canada
today? :) We all hopped into the car for a short drive
through some snowy roads and parked on a little side street.
Walking up to La Banquise, you could sense there was
something great inside. We were met with
a long line of patrons waiting for their chance at the frites (that’s fancy for
French fries heheh) and toppings. The
sights and smells of large dishes passing by made it difficult to just
patiently stand in line, and not feel hungrier than when you walked in. Wow was the kitchen cooking! The line grew very very quickly it did move
pretty quickly as well. Our waitress
seated us and left us with a pitcher of water and glasses to serve
ourselves. We took a few moments to
peruse the menu, only to find ourselves back at the page of poutiness: what we
really came for.
I decided on the regular size “La Mart.” This pretty plate was a poutine dish covered
in gravy with mushrooms, bacon, hot-dog.
The gravy was a bit on the salty side, but paired well with the
different meats and toppings. The bacon
was there but really didn’t add much (even though I love me some bacon!) just
because the flavor of the gravy really covered it up. The gravy also caused the bacon to lose its
crispiness, adding to its lack of presence.
The cheese curds added a wonderful chewy texture that contrasted the
potato nicely. And they tasted oh so
yummy…
My friend ordered the large “La T-Rex.” Holy moly, this was a large plate. It was more like a bowl plate that was filled
beyond the brim with frites, ground beef, pepperoni, bacon and hot-dog sausages. This is the ONE for meat lovers. And I mean meat LOVERS. They probably have a whole cow and pig in
this dish. This was very similar to my Mart, except there was a mixture of ground beef thrown into the mix. It was a little on the salty side when added in with the gravy, but was well worth the extra points tacked onto my blood pressure heheh...
This is one place to keep in mind when you are looking for
some heavy eats. The heavenly greasy and
hearty dish was generously satisfying.
The portion sizes are huge and dense; only one of my dining companions
was able to finish his plate. As
unhealthy as the food was, it was just too good to be unhappy with it.
The restaurant was filled to the brim, with a short wait to get seated. I hear it is like this all the time, but I think it it worth it.
So, How Nuts Are We about La Banquise?
Food: 4 coconuts. Comfort food central.
Service:
4 coconuts. Good, fast service, that was really helpful when it came to the explaining the menu.
Repeatability: 5 coconuts. You really have to be in the mood for something heavy (maybe after a night on the town or partying) or when you are just really hungry but definitely repeatable. This one will be harder for me to revisit, but I am sure when I go back to Montreal I will make my way back in!
Until next time... @(。・o・)@
