On day four of our Paris adventure, Petchi and I enjoyed a smoked salmon sandwich from a shop at Versailles. Of course, no meal would be complete without a small dessert. Unfortunately, our camera battery was charging while we were eating so no pictures of lunch. Hopefully this picture of Versaille will make things better.
Since we were so tired after a day walking the ground of Versailles, we decided to head to another local bakery for some eats. We peered into the window and saw a pile of quiches. There were so many different flavors. I decided on a veggie quiche and Petchi went with a tomoato and mustard quiche. After choosing our quiches, the baker quickly whisked them away to the back so that they could be toasted. The smell of the quiches got stronger and stronger as they got warmer in the toaster. Of course, while waiting for the quiches, we spied a pistachio éclair. Since we were both having such great luck with pistachio flavored pastries, why not get a pistachio éclair, right?
The quiches were delicious. The crust was buttery and flaky and the filling was warm and flavorful. The mustard and tomato quiche had a nice tangy and smoky cheese flavor. The veggie quiche was full of yummy vegetables, but was a bit more bland than the mustard tomato quiche. The meal was definitely simple but satisfying.
The éclair had a nice tasting filling but the pastry had been refrigerated for a bit so it was cold and chewy. What a shame.
On day 5 of our trip, we spent the day walking from Île Saint-Louis to the Champs-Élysées.
We didn't feel like stopping for a long lunch, so you guessed it, we stopped in another bakery for a sandwich. If you ever get to have a sandwich in France, I'm sure you would understand how obsessed we are with them. We can't get enough of the fresh breads! :)
We figured that since we splurged on the soda, we would skip the dessert. Can I just say that it was really hard? Just take a look at this case of tasty treats!
The satay was juicy and tender. The meat had a nice flavoring of the curry and coconut. The peanut sauce was a little sweet for my taste, but was very creamy.
The Pad Thai was a very bland. I'm used to a more in your face flavor of sweet and tangy tamarind and spices but this was very mild. It would be good for someone who is trying Thai food for the first time and wanted to ease into the new flavors. The noodles were a good consistency and the vegetables were fresh. If this had just a stronger flavor, it would have been perfect.
The Pad Kra Pao was more promising. It had a lot more flavor and was not too sweet or salty. It could have been spicier, but the table spices were enough to kick it up to the perfect spice level.
Overall this, was a great meal. The staff was friendly and helpful to those who weren't as well versed in Thai food. There were also many regulars who either came in for their weekly take out or sat down and enjoyed a lengthy conversation with the owner. It was a cozy restaurant and I would definitely love to go there again to try some more of their dishes.
Here are your tips for this week:
- Always carry some cash. A lot of the smaller local places only take cash so be prepared. You don't want to get stuck not being able to pay for something you ordered.
- If you are looking to keep your costs lower on food, look for combinations that include appetizers, your main dish, and dessert. You will most likely have less to choose from, but you get to try more things.
- Don't be afraid to splurge a little. It will be less expensive to just go ahead and try that one thing that seemed a little expensive at the time than to have to go back a second time.
